Can someone read your encrypted text messages?
Right now, it would appear the answer is, “no.” But advances in computer science, particularly in the realm of quantum computing might change that. Most text/chat messages are encrypted. This is the case with Line, Viber, Whatsapp and such. Some services allow you to change your settings so that your messages are encrypted. This is the case with Telegram, WeChat, QQ, Skype and more.
The current encryption is based on difficult math questions that are too complex for a computer to calculate. But with future computers, they might be able to crack these complicated math problems with ease. That might be a problem if you are using the current encryption algorithms to encrypt your messages.
So, recently Apple has come up with a new algorithm they claim will be unbreakable – even if a working, practical quantum computer is developed. They have started using this new algorithm, called PQ3, for new iMessages going forward. That way, even if someone is intercepting and saving your text messages, with the idea of reading them at some future date with a quantum computer – if you used Apple, they won’t be able to see your communications!
